Breastplate of Righteousness

Ephesians 6: The Armor of God - Breastplate of Righteousness

This is the second part of the Armor of God series where we can get an idea of what the Breastplate of Righteousness would have looked like according to the description in Ephesians.

Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

So how does the breastplate of righteousness protect us in our spiritual battle?

It's quite interesting to note that the breastplate would cover up the vital organs of the person who wears it, including the heart. To put on a breastplate of righteousness would mean to walk in righteousness in our everyday lives, guarding ourselves from enemy attacks which could attempt to make us fall into temptation leading us to walk in unrighteousness. If we are not living a life which is pleasing to God, how can we walking in righteousness?

We need to walk in righteousness so that we can resist the devil in the areas of our lives which it would try to make us fall.

Many of the scriptures which talk about righteousness would tell us not to live a life as the world lives, such as:

Romans 6:13 - And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

and

Romans 14:17 - for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Walking in righteousness is something that comes out of our relationship with God. Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to help lead and guide us into the truth, since the Holy Spirit teaches us the truth, we need to apply that truth to our lives; it is the only way that we can walk in righteousness. The closer we are to God, the less likely we are going to fall when an attack comes.

Imagine a soldier who had no breastplate to protect him? It is the same as looking at a christian who has no protection over his heart, the walls are down because he is not in the right place with God. In order to protect ourselves, we need to be right with God, walking in truth, faith and in righteousness.
