The Bible – Focusing on the Facts

I’ve been reading part of John MacArthur’s book – How to Study the Bible, and in there were some study questions which I thought might be interesting to add to the blog (With my answers).. so there they are. Feel free to answer the questions yourself.

Why is the Bible the only Book for a living man as well as a dying man?

The Bible tells us everything we ever needed to know. It not only gives us answers to questions we may have, but it also tells us how to live our lives and how we can live in the fullness of our relationship with God.

We can learn from the life of Jesus and the testimonies of those who knew Him how to live our own lives in order to please God and live a fulfilling life in Christ. We can also learn how to have a close and intimate relationship with God as well as discover how to walk in His will and fulfil the potential placed in us to live a life which glorifies God and participate in the plans and purposes of God in the world we live in and in the lives of people around us.

With so many false doctrines and teachers, it is important that we, as Christians study the Word so that we know the truth and can recognise when truth is not being spoken as well have answers to those who question us on the truth.

By studying the Word, we also learn how to walk in our relationship with God, seek God in our daily lives and live with all the promises God gave to us.

The Bible is the true living Word of God, therefore, it is the only book we will ever need which breathes life into us which is the food for a spirits.

How can we know that the Bible is infallible in its original autographs?

The Bible is the true Word of God. God is the author as the Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible talks about divine things, and things that are divine are of God. Psalm 19:7 says “The law of the Lord is perfect”. God is perfect and by the Holy Spirit the Word of God was authored, and since the author is perfect, then the Bible must be perfect because there is no imperfection in God.

What word describes that the Bible is true in its parts?

The Bible is inerrant. This means that it is without error, therefore since the Bible claims itself to be the true Word of God, then it is true in all parts.

What passage of the Bible is a testimony to its completeness?

Revelation 22:18-19 makes it clear that there are no words to be added or taken away from the book.
For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

This is sufficient enough to tell us that there is no need for us to add more to the Bible, everything we ever needed to know is already written and is sufficient and applicable throughout all generations. God does not change His mind about His word.

Why does the Bible demand obedience?

The Bible is complete and perfect, therefore it is the final authority as there is nothing else that is written which gives direction and laws to abide by which can claim the same authority or perfection. There is also no other scripture that was written to challenge the truth of the Bible, the Bible is the first and final authority.

Give some verses that support the authority of the Bible?

Isaiah 1:2
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth! For the LORD has spoken:

When the Lord speaks, He expects everyone to listen.

John 8:30–32
As He spoke these words, many believed in Him.
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Jesus expects those who hear His word of truth to abide in His word. This means to remain in His truth which also means to obey the truth of His word.

Galatians 3:10
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.

James 2:9-10
but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.

Now this one would certainly apply to those who believe that the some written laws should no longer apply since some believe we have changed in how we live our lives since those laws were written. Infact, the only thing that has changed is our own submission to accepting certain sin as acceptable and a normal part of living in today’s society. Just because the world may find them acceptable, does not mean that God does. God does not have a comprimising attitude to His word.. His Word it truth.

What things is the Bible sufficient for?

a) Salvation

The Bible teaches us about salvation through Jesus and how we can be saved.

b) Perfection

2 Timothy 3:16–17
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

This scripture tells us that the Bible is beneficial to teach to others as well as being good for directing and correcting people to walk in righteousness. The Bible also provides everything we need in order to be equipped to fulfil Gods will in our lives.

c) Hope

Romans 15:4
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

The Bible gives us hope when we seem to be in hopeless situations. All the encouragement we need is in the Word which is reveled to us by The Holy Spirit.

d) Blessing

James 1:25
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

The Bible teaches us that if we hear the Word and act on what the Word tells us, then we will be blessed. Blessed means to be happy, so if we hear and obey the word, we will be happy in our lives.

e) Effective

Isaiah 55:11
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

God’s word is effective. If God says something, then it shall be done. We can say things at times and they have no effect, however, when God speaks, his words always has an effect, they are not empty forgotten words, but all the words which God speaks will be fulfilled.

1 Thessalonians 1:5
For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.

f) The Bible is determinative

John 8:47
He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

How you act on what you hear will determine whether or not it will have a positive effect on your life. How you respond to the Gospel will determine where you will spend eternity, if you hear Gods words, then you are of God, but if you do not hear or respond to God’s word, then you are not of God.

The Bible shows that it is determinative in the sense that how you hear and respond to what you hear will determine the outcome of how you live your daily life as well as where the path you walk on will lead you.

What is Scripture profitable for?

2 Timothy 3:16–17
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

This scripture tells us that the Bible is beneficial to teach to others as well as being good for directing and correcting people to walk in righteousness. The Bible also provides everything we need in order to be equipped to fulfil Gods will in our lives.

According to James 1:21, what is the Word of God able to do when you receive it?

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

This passage teaches us that if we hear the Word and act on what the Word tells us, then we will be blessed. Blessed means to be happy. So if we hear and obey the word, we will be happy in our lives.

What does Isaiah 55:11 indicate about the Bible?

Isaiah 55:11
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

God’s word is effective. If God says something, then it shall be done. We can say things at times and they have no effect, however, when God speaks, his words always have an effect and what he says, will be done. God is not like a man that He would lie.

Explain how the Bible is determinative. How are believers able to understand the Word of God? Why can’t unbelievers understand it?

1 Cor 2:9-14
But as it is written:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The determinative aspect of the scripture is based on whether or not those who hear the word will receive the true meaning through revelation of the Holy Spirit or whether they will read with their own minds without revelation.

We cannot understand the true meaning of scripture without the guidance of The Holy Spirit, if someone who does not know God reads the scripture, they will not be able to understand the true meaning, as it was meant for those whereby the Holy Spirit could reveal the true meaning to our spirit.

Only the Holy Spirit knows the deep things of God, the world does not know the deep things of God; therefore, we need The Holy Spirit to reveal to us those deep things which He gives us freely. This is something that cannot be revealed to those who do not know God because they will not have received the gift of The Holy Spirit, so there is nothing to reveal the truth of scripture to them.

The Bible is of divine nature, so we need the interpretation in a divine language.

Explain how experience is able to prove that the Bible is true. What is the weakness in using experience as proof?

The experience is only proof to those who have the experience. We cannot prove to someone else our own experience of things. Those who have experienced what it is like with no gravity, cannot prove to me what it is like to float without gravity. The experience is not sufficient enough for me to fully understand what it is to float in space.

What are three areas of science that the Bible discusses?

Rainfall, fixed orbits and balance. (Will elaborated on in next questions.)

How does the Bible support the scientific principle of hydrology?

Isaiah 55:10
For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater

It is only really since the 8th century that snow hydrology was discovered as a breakthrough in science; however, it was already spoken about in the Bible although the name was not yet given. It is not science supporting the Bible, this is the Bible supporting science on this occasion.

Many claim that the Bible has nothing to do with Science; however, things that scientists have ‘discovered’ are already spoken about in the Bible.

What is the study of Isostasy? What does the Bible say about it?

Isostasy is the study of the balance of the earth. Isostasy states that for anything to balance there must be equal weights on both sides. For the earth, there must be an equal weight of land and sea.

Isostasy, although not then named, was already spoken about in the Bible before man gave a name to it.

Isaiah 40:12
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, measured heaven with a span and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? Weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance

?

What five classic scientific categories are found in the first verse of the Bible?

Genesis 1:1
In the beginning (TIME) God (FORCE) created (ACTION) the heavens (SPACE) and the earth (MATTER).

A man who was considered a great Philosopher and Sociologist who infact supported Evolution said that all things that exist in the universe can be categorized into 5 things – Time, Force, Action, Space and Matter, yet we see in Genesis 1:1 all these things were already spoken about through Gods creation, not through evolution.

How did Jesus Christ reveal His trust in the authority of Scripture?

Jesus preached quoting scripture, but besides that in Matthew 5:18 He says:
For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle (stroke of a letter) will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

How can we know that all the miracles recorded in the Bible are true?

There were thousands of witnesses to the miracles that we read in scripture. Even after Jesus rose from the dead when He remained on the earth for 40 days, He was seen by over 500 witnesses.

What is the only way to explain how the Bible could predict historical events?

There is no way to explain the fact that the Bible predicts things that are going to happen historically, unless we see God as the Author. Peter Stoner, in his book Science Speaks, said that if you take just eight of the Old Testament prophecies Christ fulfilled (Stoner is a scientist in the area of mathematical probabilities), and add up the probabilities that these eight things could come to pass by accident, it would be one chance in 1017 that such an accident could happen—and yet every detail has come to pass.

One chance in 1017 would be like filling the state of Texas two-feet deep in silver dollars, putting an “x” on one of them, and giving a blind man one pick. He’d have one chance in 1017 picking the one with an “x” on it. That’s how much chance there is, according to the mathematics of probability, of these eight prophecies (with their specific details) ever coming to pass by accident.

What verse in the Bible indicates that God’s Word is the source of truth?

John 17:17
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

What did Jesus mean when He said, “If ye continue in my word … ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”?

When we have questions, we do not find freedom until we find the answer to those questions. There are many people who are searching for answers regarding life and whether or not God exists, but Jesus is the truth, so when we find that truth, then we are free because we have the answers to all questions through His word.

What are some of the truths that are found in the Bible?

There are many, but here are just a few:

Ephesians 1:13
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

James 1:18
Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

John 14:6
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Since the Bible is the source of truth, what does it give to the one who believes it?

Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;

If we hear the truth, and learn the truth, we will be joyful or happy because we come to know the truth.

Jesus tells us in Luke 11:28

More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Blessed in Greek means; fortunate, well off and happy.

How can you be a happy person?

We have seen that by hearing Gods word, keeping His laws and walking in His will, we will be blessed, which means, we will be happy people.
