Be Holy As I Am Holy

Therefore prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given to you when Jesus is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires (lusts) you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is Holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be Holy, because I am Holy". 1 Peter 1:13-16

Ah no, it's that word again....Holy! Ok, so this was what I was looking at this morning, and because I've been checking out the meanings of words in the Hebrew and Greek (hey, I'm allowed to at least pretend I'm a bit smart.. lol) here is what "holy" means:

(Greek translation) Hagios pronounced hag'-ee-os meaning sacred, physically pure, morally blameless, ceremonially consecrated, saint, most holy one.

So, when we are told to be holy, we are being told to be pure and blameless physically and morally! Hmm...not hard.. is it? It is if your anything like me, but thank God he is prepared to help us daily to be holy like Him.

The truth is, we have, by grace, already been made holy (Hebrews 10:10)

When we received forgiveness, we were washed clean by Jesus' blood that he shed on the cross and when we were washed in His blood, we were made holy but we need to continue to be holy everyday. Okaaaay, but how do we do this? Basically, it's about how we live our lives each day, what choices we make, how we react to things, what comes out of our mouths, how we treat others etc. Being holy each day means taking control over how we live each day. (Yeh, we love this sort of stuff don't we).

I have a Sun Conure parrot and believe me, if I needed a daily challenge on how to be holy, he would be it (I think it's a he)! My parrot doesn't talk, he SCREAMS! I don't mean a little squawk, I mean a piercing SCREAM and he doesn't shut up until he gets what he wants! There are many times when I could choose to scream back because the noise is just so annoying (I have done this before by the way, I'm not perfect yet), but if I do that, it means I have lost control and given in to the annoyance.

This could be the same for many things that present themselves to us each day; how we react to the car that just cut us up, how we deal with negative thoughts, what we say to the computer when it crashes and all the work you have been doing for the last few hours just vanished into cyber space (yes, I've been there too). Everytime a challenge comes our way, how we respond determines whether or not we are being holy. Do we scream and shout at the parrot, or do we refuse to lose control and deal with things through grace?

[stextbox id="alert" bcolor="cccccc" bgcolor="e6e6fa"]Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2[/stextbox]

Renew in Hebrew means Chadash, this means to rebuild, repair or renovate. This was something I didn't think about before when I read that scripture. Renew your mind means to repair or rebuild your mind. Something that needs to be repaired must mean that at one time it was perfect! That means, there was a time when our minds were perfect!

Just as we were made holy when we were forgiven and washed by the blood, our minds, thoughts, ideas were made perfect too!

Renewing your mind also means taking control over what you think and how you deal with thoughts that come into your mind. There have been many times a thought has dropped into my mind and I have known it was not my thought. The devil tries to drop thoughts into your mind and then try to make you think it was your thought! So not every bad thought comes from you!

I try to judge my thoughts by what my heart tells me. If a thought comes into my mind but it is not in agreement with my heart, then I can pretty much discount that thought as not belonging to me. But there are also times when a thought does belong to me, so the question is, how do I deal with it? Do I entertain it, or do I throw it out and ask for forgiveness for ever having that thought in the first place?

God doesn't beat us up for having a bad thought, but He does expect us to deal with those thoughts correctly according to what is in line with His will. If it is negative thought, throw it out! This is how we can renew our minds, we take control over our thoughts. You know, you can even tell your mind to be quiet! You know the nights when you are laying in bed and you have thoughts going round and round and round, command your mind to be quiet in Jesus name.. take authority over your mind! Try it, it works!

So there we have it (or at least for this post) to live in holiness means taking control over our thoughts and actions, what we think and how we react to things as well as what choices we make everyday. If we start taking control, people will notice the difference and you will be a testament to Jesus, because they will see more of Him in you through The Holy Spirit! Praise God!
